Train dispatching between crew an dispatcher?

as a conductor or engineer while talking to the dispatcher like how do you talk? do you use codes and numbers or do you just use basic stuff like words and where you are and all that since ive heard both between the conductor and dispatcher on vids and i was wondering if you can do whichever one or do you have to use codes?
